A unique hybrid MMO game that combines elements from multiple genres such as old school sidescroller Beat ‘Em Ups, RPGs and collectible card games, Discarded Online is now enjoying its fourth week of open beta, which went live a little less than a month ago courtesy of GameDozer, the company that’s also currently offering Battalion, an online multiplayer turn-based tactical wargame, for free.
The game is played via web browser and employs a clean image that’s suitable for youngsters. It contains no blood, gore or any offensive content, and the violence is represented by cartoon animations.
Online web-based games with collectible card elements is an undeniable growing trend due to their ability to generate micro-transaction revenue for game developers. One of the latest titles to continue this trend is The Continuum, an online collectible wargame that combines turn-based wargaming, collectible card game elements and RPG elements into one deep game. The Continuum requires no download as it’s programmed entirely in Flash and will be free to play. However, players will have the option to purchase packs of new random units. The game is undergoing closed testing and will be entering public beta soon. Registrations are now open.
Targeted mainly at younger audiences, Wizard101 hopes to attract many players from untapped demographics with its family-friendly approach to MMOs. Their “Ultimate Secure Chat” makes sure conversations are kept clean and pre-generated character names allows players to choose from thousands of combinations so players aren’t creating names unsuited for the atmosphere of Wizard101. The game can best be described as a cross between a traditional MMORPG and a typical virtual world. Wizard101 also offers minigames and a collectible card game on top of your standard MMO elements.
Urban Rivals is a wildly popular online multiplayer collectible card game with characters based on pop-culture stereotypes released back in early 2006.
